National Parks In Rwanda

National Parks In Rwanda - National Parks Of Rwanda

Rwanda famously known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” is home to some of Africa’s most breathtaking landscapes and wildlife. The country’s national parks offer a perfect escape into nature, where travelers can experience unique ecosystems, rich biodiversity, and exciting wildlife encounters. From the mountain gorillas of Volcanoes National Park to the sweeping savannahs of Akagera and the lush rainforests of Nyungwe, Rwanda’s parks are a haven for nature lovers and adventurers alike. The national parks of Rwanda are protected destinations and wildlife reserves located within the borders of Rwanda. In 2020, these protected natural destinations include the Volcanoes National Park, Akagera National Park, and Nyungwe Forest. Maintenance of the national park and tourism of the parks in Rwanda are managed by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) with help from government ministries.

Each national park has a different ecosystem and a variety of species. Bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, into which the Virungas volcanic mountain chain stretches, Volcanoes National Park is the most heavily guarded park in the world and the oldest in Africa. In combination with bordering parks in the neighboring countries, it serves as the world’s best habitat for mountain gorillas, whose numbers have been growing here over the past years. Travelers to the gorillas are exactly limited and access must be purchased, often well in advancement, from the Rwanda Development Bank. Golden monkeys also occupy a different part of the park. To the southeast along the Burundi border, Nyungwe National Park has many chimpanzees and different primate species in a rainforest environment.

To the eastern border of Rwanda, along Lake Victoria and Tanzania, is the location of Akagera National Park which has a variety of African fauna in a savannah ecosystem, including giraffes, elephants, buffalo, baboons, gazelles, and zebra. Lions also occupied the park but were killed by poisoning during and after the Rwandan genocide. However, in 2015, seven lions were brought to Akagera National Park, and the population has since grown to nearly 40 individuals.
